At
the time the world of custom bikes was in its infancy; nothing
like what we know it as today. When the bike was finished in late
1995 it was featured in the October issue of Hot Bike magazine
due to it being one of the most radical customs of its time. Ever
since then the bike has been transformed again and again. We toured
the bike show circuit picking up various first place trophies.
After a while the bike became somewhat notable and we began to
get invitations to events to exhibit the bike and put on a little
show for the crowd, which landed us on the cover of the Thunder
Press’ November 1996 issue. To attest to the bike’s
cutting edge look, it was featured again in Quick Throttle magazine
in March of 1997. After a time we were tired of the custom bike
show scene and decided that it was time to take it to the track.
That just wasn’t going to do, so after that weekend we went
back to Rose City Cycle, the shop that Dave had opened in March
of 1996, to change the bike’s set up. We decided that the
quickest way to increase the performance was to put nitrous oxide
on the bike. So we called up the local NOS distributor and ordered
a system. That helped us get into the 10-second range, but that
was far from a competitive time for the racing circuit. As time
progressed we began to get better and became more of a team. We
didn’t get a real glimpse of the racing world until 1997
when we made our first 1300 mile trek to Sturgis, SD for the annual
rally and races. This being our first trip to the rally of all
rallies, we soon found out that we had a great deal to learn about
drag racing. The field was field with well-known racers like Jeff
Flora and Gary Stroud. In the end we basically got our lunch,
and then some, handed to us. That experience gave us the wake
up call that we needed. From then on out we became more involved
in the racing world, constantly talking to other racers trying
to pick their brain for the slightest bit of information that
might get us to go faster. Over time we were able to gather enough
info to get us on the right track to the winner’s circle.
We kept on chipping away at it until we finally won our first
event in 1998 at the ADBA Phoenix race, which is no longer held.
This was to be our break through year. We were able to win multiple
races that year and capture the 1998 AHDRA Western Division Pro
Gas Championship.
